Roderick Hietbrink

Roderick Hietbrink (Gorssel, 1975) is a contemporary Dutch visual artist, living and working in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His practice encompasses video art, installation art, performance art, sculpture and photography.
Roderick Hietbrink received a degree in architectural engineering followed by a study in visual arts at the Academy of Art and Design St. Joost in Breda. His interest in architecture remained an important aspect within his artistic practice as he graduated in 1999 with a series of works questioning the experience of space through sound. His interest in sound led to a self-published electronic music album titled 'Kahara' in the following year. In 2000 Hietbrink moved to the city of Rotterdam to follow an MA course in fine arts at the Piet Zwart Institute where he received his degree in 2002 with the immersive installation 'Parallax' consisting of three large video projections and surround sound. This work became part of his first museum exhibition at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
In 2003 Hietbrink took part in the residency program at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin resulting in the solo exhibition 'Corner Corone', a two-screen video installation depicting a hooded crow, seemingly trapped inside the austere architecture of an empty office space at Potsdamer Platz. Other international residencies include Platform Garanti in Istanbul (2005), Artspace Sydney (2007) and the Institute For Provocation in Beijing (2010).
Between 2008 until 2010 Hietbrink was a tutor at the fine art department of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.
From 2011 Hietbrink took part in the two-year residency program at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam with among his advisors Dutch artist Marijke van Warmerdam, British artist Nathaniel Mellors and art historian and critic John C. Welchman () who worked extensively with Mike Kelley; an American artist whose work has been influential to Hietbrink's current practice.
His work has been selected for international film festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL)(), Documentary Film and Video Festival Kassel (DE)() and International Short Film Festival, Vilnius (LT)(). Several of his video works are distributed by EYE Film Institute Netherlands.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Director Roderick Hietbrink - Eye Filminstitute Experimental Film Distribution )
In 2013 Hietbrink was nominated for the Prix de Rome, the oldest and largest art prize in the Netherlands.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Prix de Rome )

Through the use of different media, Hietbrink raises questions concerning Western culture by using absurdism and violence in cinematographic settings. A key work in Hietbrink's oeuvre is the video installation 'The Living Room' (2011). In this work the interior of a Dutch living room is confronted with the destructive force of a full grown oak tree that is dragged through the room. This work is part of the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and is on view until March 2014
